How to Make A Water Filter – DIY Prepping

We have previously looked at Storing water for Preppers and more recently Finding Safe Drinking Water.

One of the steps you will need to make after you have collected water that hasn’t been processed is to filter it.

This is the first thing you will need to do to remove any dirt or debris before you purify it.

The Basic Method

An easy but not very effective method is to use a few items you will probably already have at home.

You will need:

  • Something to hold the dirty water (bucket etc.)
  • A Funnel
  • A Strainer
  • A Clean bottle to pour it in
  • Cheese Cloth / Coffee Filters / Clean t-shirt

Line the strainer with your filter material and place it over the funnel.

Put the end of the funnel into the mouth of the bottle and pour.

The resulting water will be cleaner than it was but you may need to repeat this process until there is no more visible improvement.

The Better Method

A much better and proven method is to make your own portable water filter.

You will need:

  • An empty 2 litre plastic bottle
  • Clean Cotton Wool / Cotton batting
  • Coarse Gravel
  • Fine Gravel
  • Coarse Sand
  • Fine Sand
  • A Coffee Filter

Cut the top of the two litre bottle and follow the info-graph shown below.

Can I Drink the Water Now?

Depending on the source you will now also need to Distill it and Purify it, or just Purify it.
